As part of our reading and writing
curriculum we are now reading Thomas
Edison: The Great Inventor by Caryn Jenner as a class. To enhance learning
students will choose the invention they think is Thomas Edison’s best
Invention. They will then be given the opportunity to research this invention
and find more supporting details to back up their opinion. Once students have
at least three reasons why their chosen invention is the best they will fill in
their writing template. After completion students will transform the
information organized on their template into an opinionated essay.
This
activity will be further enhanced in computer class. Students will take their
opinionated essay, type it up and post it to www.teinvent.blogspot.com . Students will not automatically be able to see their post
on the blog because I must first via my email, accept any post attempted to be
placed on the blog. This is a safety procedure, in order to protect the blog
from any outside the classroom sources.
After
the initial posts are made and approved, students will have another opportunity
in computer class to read through all of their classmates’ posts. They will
during this class be instructed to pick at least one of their classmates’ post
and comment on it. Students will
be given examples of comments to give. For example: “I really liked your reasons for why the light bulb was his best
invention, they made me rethink my choice of X-rays.”
